International Scientific Research Project 2009

As organizers of this symposium we, Nasser Bouman and Sjoerd Vijfvinkel, intent to put the topic of sustainability more heavily on the agenda. Now that the hype surrounding sustainability is diminishing, it is time for actions and effective implementation. But how, where, when and why? On the 14th of December we can put our heads together one more time to learn from each others visions, stances and ideas. After that, it is time for everyone to act!

We see ourselves as two driven entrepreneurs with a close involvement with the topic of sustainability. Recently we graduated for the Master program Entrepreneurship, Strategy and Organization Economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Since August of 2008 we have been involved with the coordination and execution of an individually organized scientific research project focused on the profitability of sustainable business. By means of the International Scientific Research Project 2009, a book will be published that comprises, among other sources, this research. The scientific and economical approach will here be combined with practical actualities. The complexity and multilateral aspects of sustainability will be discussed using a micro as well as a macro perspective. In addition, the roles of the most prominent parties will be discussed – consumers, the business community, and the governments – and the interaction between these parties.

After finalizing the ISRP project, the obtained knowledge will be used in practice by us through the starting of a new company which will focus on consultancy in the field of sustainability. We will provide advice specifically for Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME’s) concerning the sustainability strategies a firm can and cannot undertake. Sustainable development in this respect requires a custom made solution. Every company, irrespective of their core business, should take into account sustainability values in progression to a better world. But the presence of opportunities and threats will differ substantially per firm.
